I love metal. I bet every one of you know this.

I was talking to someone who doesn't listen to metal at all about the genre, about why I liked it. It boils down to the feelings it inspires that is very hard to get from any other music or art form really. The music is fueled on aggression, a lot of the time from anger, but not always.

"Extreme" metal exemplifies this. Do you know what I mean by that term? Metal that pushes you even further into some sort of aggressive abyss. Metal that is too metal for some.

But when I hear that riff, or that scream, or whatever it is and it just hits me in the face, there's no feeling like it. It can give you a momentary high.

Bands that do this for me:

Enslaved
Ulver
Akercocke
Emperor
Converge
Hypocrisy
Lykathea Aflame
Neurosis
Old Man Gloom
Pig Destroyer
Rosetta
Windir
Woe
Strapping Young Lad

Slightly related.
One of my friends was trying to find music to listen to on my iPod about a half hour ago and he was like, "WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ANY HAPPY MUSIC?!?!?! D: D: D: D: D:"

And then I realized that:
1. I don't really have any music that is "happy" (even the stuff I find happy is apparently dismal to the rest of the world);
2. "Happy" music doesn't do for me what metal/industrial/etc does; and
3. Fuck the term happy! It's too subjective to be used broadly in terms of emotions inspired by music.

Yay music.

ah yes, Neurosis. My ex got me into them. I, at first, thought they were stupid, but now every time I listen to them, it feels like some primal instinct is awake inside me, ready to start some primeval mating dance or something. Especially the song Cleanse. 15 minutes of insane drum beats, incredible beat...it just takes me in and then spits me out.

Enemy of the Sun is especially jarring.

And yes, I am answering this post with a Hanson icon. I am metal, I am pop. I can't makeup my mind.
